mural on wall that says soar with couch and table in front of it

On December 18, 2023, Emerald Hill Elementary School (EHES) students, faculty, and parents gathered at an open house celebration to witness the remarkable transformation of a once bland space next to the cafeteria into a vibrant, student-designed haven. The EHES Interior Design Club, sponsored by teacher Cortney Kaminski and local artist Layton Scarbrough, transformed the space during their after school club meetings this fall.

With the support of the ESSER III Before and After School grant, the Interior Design Club was able to embark on this ambitious project. Kaminski and Scarbrough guided the students through the process, from initial planning to the finishing touches. The open house served as a showcase for the impressive results of their hard work.  During the event, students gave tours and explained the project to attendees.  Refreshments were served as part of the celebration of the new space.

Students led every step of the process in the Interior Design Club.  A sales team pitched their innovative ideas to the school's Principal, Dr. Tori Gelbert, who fully supported the project. The club had officers, including 5th-grade student Dorian Douangdy, who helped manage the money as the club treasurer.  The student-led structure added an extra layer of responsibility and leadership to the project.

Armed with a $1000 budget, the students demonstrated their resourcefulness by securing donations from local businesses such as Lowe's. Additionally, generous contributions of couches and chairs were made, further enhancing the inviting atmosphere of the transformed space. The club members not only repurposed existing furniture but also displayed their artistic flair by painting a captivating mural on one of the walls and adding vibrant colors to the side tables.

The process of creating the mural was a collaborative effort. The kids engaged in brainstorming sessions to generate ideas, and Scarbrough sketched drafts for the students to consider. The final design emerged from a student vote, combining two popular concepts into a cohesive masterpiece.  Scarbrough, who had already painted a mural in the EHES conference room, then guided the students through the painting process.

The rejuvenated area, used for lunches, is a testament to the Interior Design Club's dedication to creating a welcoming environment for the school community. When asked, Dr. Gelbert shared, “I’m so impressed with all the students did for this club. From their very professional sales pitch, to budget keeping, to actual implementation of their idea, this space is truly a masterpiece that reflects their creativity and adds to the beauty of our school.”

The transformed space not only showcases the students' artistic abilities but also underscores the importance of creative expression and collaboration within the school community. Oliver Ferreria, a fifth grade student who was part of the club said, "I loved Interior Design Club because it was something very unique. I enjoyed the artistic aspect and painting the mural for the school to enjoy through the future!" The investment that this group of students took into improving a space within their school sets an inspiring example for future student-led initiatives at Emerald Hill Elementary School and across the school division.
