Mrs. Abbott's first graders worked on equal and not equal parts after listening to an Equal Shmequal read aloud! Learning sure is fun when you're with Mrs. Abbott.

Ms Zuna has been busy in the library hopping right on into spring. She recently taught grades PK-4 about author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, and has been reading different versions of The Tale of Peter Rabbit to students. Potter was a British author who lived in the 1800's and became famous for her beautiful drawings of the woodland creatures near her countryside home. She decided to write creative little stories to accompany her animal illustrations, and became a famous and beloved author. She was also quite the scientist, but couldn't get a science job because she was a female.

Mrs. Jenkins' class visited Mrs. Dugger in the Stem Zone for TestNav training in preparation for their upcoming SOL's. Students also enjoyed Mrs. Dugger's dancing and the singing of her favorite song, "I like to prove it, prove it"! 😎

Need something to brighten your spirits on this rainy morning? Mrs. Thornhill's class wrapped up their module, Grow, Plants, Grow! by creating a plant book. Check out their work and enjoy listening to them read!

Mrs. Wheeler’s third-grade class is having fun exploring polygons using pattern blocks and geoboards! Students are identifying and combining triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. As part of their learning, they created polygon flowers and spring eggs. Math and crafts make learning fun!

We can't wait to see you all tonight for Family BINGO night! When you register, you will receive one raffle ticket. More raffle tickets can be purchased at the door. See the flyer for all the amazing items that we will be raffling off!

Second-grade students in Mrs. Foster's class used Froot Loops and color tiles to visually represent fractions of a set. They sorted the cereal and tiles by color and then determined what fraction of the total each color represented.

Ms. Herring's class had an interesting assignment in music class on Tuesday. They had to decode a message written in musical symbols and follow the directions given in the message. Little did they know, the instructions were to play air guitar in front of the class! APRIL FOOLS!

Spring is springing in Mrs. Beard’s class! Students have been working on identifying, extending, and transferring increasing patterns. Then they made a springtime mural as a final group culmination project.

Mrs. Frack’s Preschool class just finished up their Creative Curriculum Ball Study. They investigated how balls roll and bounce, what balls are made of, what is inside of balls, and who uses balls. They used ball-themed games and activities to help them continue to grow early literacy, science, and math skills.

Yowell Elementary had a special visit from Culpeper 4H today! 🐥 Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Kilby gave an egg-cellent demonstration on egg candling, showing students how to see inside developing eggs. They also introduced us to two feathered friends, Sweet Pea and Sweetie Pie, who the students loved meeting and petting! 🐓
During the visit, we learned about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, and the students asked some fantastic questions—like what chickens eat, how incubator eggs differ from store-bought ones, and where the Yowell chicks will stay during spring break.
A big thank you to Culpeper 4H for an egg-citing and educational experience! 🥚🐣🐓

Welcome to our space! Mrs. Houston's class has been hard at work learning about polygons. To close out our polygon unit and to review fractions on a number line, students created their own piece of outer space. They then worked to solve math word problems on the theme of outer space. This classroom is out of this world!

Congratulations to all of our stallions who competed in the Math 24 Competition last night! We have some amazing mathematicians here at Yowell! A special shout out to Anish, Parker and Zane who all placed in the finals! Way to go, stallions! We are so proud of you!

Mrs. Bopp has been feeling very lucky this month to be with her learners! The class built 3-D shapes out of marshmallows and toothpicks, created a fruit loop rainbow and wrote about what they would do if they found a pot of gold. They also compared fractions using tiles.

Ms. Butterfield’s class has been studying measurement in math. Today the lesson introduced measuring the capacity of different containers. Students were able to work with different materials and containers to explore the capacity or how much a container holds. Students enjoyed taking turns to fill their container and answering which container had more capacity.

In Mrs. Zajkowski’s wizarding world, the students worked together in their houses to answer comprehension questions based on a poem. The students earned noses for correct answers and had to pin the nose on Voldemort! The closest nose won 500 points for their house. Congratulations, Slytherin!

Mrs. Zajkowski’s class has transformed into Hogwarts School to prepare for the upcoming SOL tests. On Friday, the students were sorted into their houses. Yesterday, the students ate Harry Potter themed snacks, earned (and lost) points for their houses, and worked together as a team to review science, math, and reading. Stay tuned for more Harry Potter fun over the next few weeks!

Mrs. Murdock's 5th graders have studied factors that impact the sustainability of planet earth. Each student is now researching and preparing arguments for a fishbowl debate. What a perfect opportunity because students at this age are typically very convincing when arguing. 😊
